Wild Atlantic Way Motorcycle Travel Guide

Ever fancied an action-packed motorcycle trip along a stunning coastline sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and a variety of landscapes? Well, look no further than Ireland’s west coast.

The Wild Atlantic Way is the Emerald Isle’s answer to the North Coast 500 with something to offer everyone from nature lovers to adventurists. So, what can you expect to see and how should you prepare when setting off on your motorbike along the Irish coast?

Wild Atlantic Way Route

Wild Atlantic Way Route

The Wild Atlantic Way begins at Ireland’s most northerly point, Malin Head in County Donegal, and ends on the south coast in Kinsale, County Cork. The 1600 mile route is straddled by the Atlantic Ocean from start to finish and highlights the best of a whopping nine counties.

Between Donegal and Cork, the journey travels through the counties of Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Clare, Limerick and Kerry. The constant meeting of land and sea showcases everything from towering cliffs, magical islands and majestic mountains to enchanting towns and villages, ancient monuments and a whole host of culture. There is something special behind every bend!

The recommended time to set aside for a motorcycle trip along the Wild Atlantic Way is 7-14 days and you can complete at your own pace. However, you may want a couple of days off the bike to fully experience particular areas or even shake off the effects of last night’s Guinness.

When Is Best To Go?

Irish weather can be unpredictable at the best of times to say the very least and for that reason, it is no easy task to predict the best periods of the year to tackle the Wild Atlantic way on a motorbike. With that said, there are months when the elements may be more favourable.

Anyone brave enough could take on the Irish winter but beware, more often than not, the locals will refer to the temperature as ‘baltic’. Set off between June and October and you will stand the best chance of experiencing Mother Nature’s kind side while April and May pose the threat of the ‘Scairbhín’ (pronounced skara-veen). This refers to unpredictable, extreme changes in weather described as experiencing all four seasons in one day.

What Should You Expect To See?

Anyone can imagine how a coastline typically looks but there is simply much to the Wild Atlantic Way than a few beaches, cliff faces and sea view. The beauty of Ireland’s west coast is truly captivating and here is what you can expect to see on your travels.

Best Things To Do Along The Way

While the scenery is certainly an attraction, there is much more to the Wild Atlantic Way. It is billed as having 15 signature discovery points, however, there are actually over 150 discovery points, 1,000 attractions and more than 2,500 activities to choose from along this coastal route.

Wild Atlantic Way best things to do

Visit Dún Briste (Downpatrick Head)

Standing 45 metres above the Atlantic Ocean, Dún Briste is a sea stack that is significant of Earth's history. The distinctive layers of rock are each said to represent a period in the life of the planet.

Guinness 'Tasting'

No trip to Ireland would be complete without a pint or two or several of the Island's national drink. 'The black stuff' is the world's most loved stout, enjoyed since 1759 and you will certainly fit in with the locals with a pint of Guinness in hand.

Listen To Traditional Music

Irish trad is a form of folk music that dates back to the 18th century and was made popular in the mid-1900s. Whether it is through a jukebox or a live performance, walk into any Irish pub and you are sure to hear that sweet sound.

Sample Local Food

Irish food may not be listed in the upper echelons of world cuisine but you will be stuck trying to find anything more warm and hearty. I would recommend a traditional Irish stew accompanied by wheaten bread, you will not be disappointed.

Whale Watching

One for the wildlife fans! Take a boat trip off the coast of County Cork and feast your eyes on the majestic minke, fin and humpback whales, not something you see every day.

Try Speaking Gaeilge

One of the first things you will notice on your trip long the Wild Atlantic Way is the Irish language (Gaeilge) road signs. Ireland has a population of around 200,000 fluent in the native language, in fact, the Gaeltacht areas are inhabited by those who speak it as their. first language. Why not give it a go yourself?

How To Prepare For Wild Atlantic Way

Due to the length of this motorcycle tour, it is key to ensure you are properly prepared for the trip.

Firstly, Ireland is known for the unpredictability of its weather and wet, windy conditions are never out of the question and therefore, multiple layers of clothing and both waterproof clothes and waterproof motorcycle luggage are recommended regardless of the time of year. It is better to prepare for the worst than it is to not be prepared at all.

If camping is on the cards for your west coast journey then pack with that in mind and ensure your bike is capable and has enough cargo space to carry it all. Lockable motorbike luggage cases would not go amiss since you will be parking out in the open and if you are riding with a pillion, you may want to consider a top box with the ability to hold two helmets with the addition of a backrest for passenger comfort.

So, if you have not tackled the Wild Atlantic Way before then it may now be at the top of the list for your next motorbike adventure.

As always, it is important to ensure you are prepared for the tour, especially given the length of this one in particular. After that, the only thing left to do is gear up, get on your motorcycle and set off on one of the best trips you will ever experience.
